Rivers of Steel Heritage Tours

Rivers of Steel’s attractions showcase the artistry and innovation of the Pittsburgh region’s industrial and cultural heritage.

  • The Industrial Tour at the Carrie Blast Furnaces takes place on the grounds of a vestige of Pittsburgh’s 20th-century domination of the steel industry. Towering 92 feet over the Monongahela River, the Carrie Blast Furnaces are rare examples of pre-WWII iron-making technology. Since the collapse of the region’s steel industry in the 1970s and ’80s, these are the only non-operative blast furnaces remaining in the region. On an Industrial Tour of Carrie, visitors learn about the site’s iron-making technology, its workers, and their culture.

  • The PGH 101: An Intro to Innovation sightseeing cruise on the Explorer riverboat takes passengers on a scenic tour of Pittsburgh’s three rivers. Docked on Pittsburgh’s North Shore near the headwaters of the Ohio River, Explorer offers unparalleled opportunities to experience the beauty and history of Pittsburgh’s skyline and shores. Passengers discover how the region’s challenging landscape, abundance of natural resources, and the resilience of its people have kept southwestern Pennsylvania on the vanguard of industrial reinvention for more than 250 years! Cruises accommodate up to 100 people. Explorer is temperature controlled and ADA accessible with an elevator onboard to access both decks. At 90 minutes, PGH 101 is the longest sightseeing cruise on Pittsburgh’s rivers.
