Travel a world of birds at the National Aviary! Visit and interact with over 600 exotic and endangered birds in natural habitats at your nation's official birdhouse.
The National Aviary is America's only nationally-designated indoor bird habitat. Located in West Park on Pittsburgh's historic North Side, the National Aviary's large walk-through exhibits create an experience unlike any other – an intimate, up close interaction between visitors and free-flying birds. The National Aviary brings guests face-to-face with an intimate, up-close wildlife in a setting that allows visitors to take in the amazing beauty of birds and watch as they eat, bathe, fly and play – with opportunities to hand-feed! Become immersed in the music of songbirds, marvel at the nobility of eagles and condors, and be amazed at the antics of penguins, parrots, pelicans and more!
The National Aviary Reopens July 1!
With new immersive experiences to enjoy alongside enhanced safety protocols, the National Aviary is excited to welcome you back to the nation's bird zoo!

Enhanced Safety:

New timed tickets and extended hours from 9 am to 6 pm allow for more space for you and your group to roam the National Aviary while practicing social distancing.

Staff and guests will be required to wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth when visiting. Masks will be available for purchase in our gift shop.

Hand washing is encouraged and hand sanitization stations are available upon entry and throughout the facility.
Group Programming
Dine with the Birds Enjoy breakfast or lunch delectably prepared by Atria's catering including a visit from our trainers who will introduce you to some of the most unique birds in our collection. Be entertained with fun facts and information as each bird showcases interesting natural behaviors; plus, enjoy up-close bird photo ops! Add to the uniqueness of your experience by booking breakfast at 8:30 or 9 a.m., before the National Aviary opens to the general public.

Be brushed by the wings of a Eurasian Eagle Owl, Blue-fronted Amazon parrot, Hooded Vulture and more during interactive bird shows complemented by light, sound and high definition video in our Helen M. Schmidt FliteZone™ theater! In summer, be amazed at the feats of free-flying raptors on our rooftop theater or delighted by a colorful live bird show in our historic rose garden.

Explore Penguin Point, a 2,300 square-foot indoor/outdoor exhibit that is home to 18 very animated African Penguins. With delightful underwater views, Penguin Point is a $1.8 million state-of-the-art exhibit featuring a tunnel into which children (and nimble adults!) can crawl to get up-close views of the penguins' underwater antics, as well as their rocky nesting grounds.

Visit the new Canary’s Call exhibit to see the jaw dropping Malayan Flying Foxes (giant fruit bats), take an up-close look at Guam Rails and Guam Kingfishers – both birds that are extinct in the wild, play an interactive touchscreen game, and admire a stunning photo display showcased on 187 backlit LED panels as you learn about the role of the canary in the coal mine and the clues birds today are giving us about changes in our natural world.
